SAXENDA PEN

Saxenda® (liraglutide) is an injectable prescription medication used primarily for weight management. It is indicated for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 27 or greater who also have weight-related medical problems or those with a BMI of 30 or greater (obesity). It is also approved for use in children aged 12-17 years who weigh more than 132 pounds (60 kg) and are classified as obese.

How Does the Saxenda Pen Work?

Saxenda works by mimicking the effects of the hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which helps regulate appetite and food intake. By activating GLP-1 receptors, Saxenda reduces appetite, slows gastric emptying, and increases feelings of fullness after meals. This mechanism aids individuals in adhering to a reduced-calorie diet and increasing physical activity, which are essential components of effective weight management.

How to Use the Saxenda Pen

The Saxenda pen is designed for subcutaneous injection, meaning it should be injected under the skin rather than into a vein or muscle. The injection can be administered in various areas such as the abdomen, upper thigh, or upper arm.

1. Preparation:

   • Before using the pen, ensure that it has been stored correctly—unused pens should be kept in the refrigerator between 36°F and 46°F (2°C to 8°C).
   • After first use, it can be stored at room temperature between 59°F and 86°F (15°C to 30°C).

2. Injection Steps:

   • Remove the pen cap.
   • Select your dose using the dose selector.
   • Clean the injection site with an alcohol swab.
   • Insert a new needle onto the pen before each injection.
   • Press and hold the dose button until you hear a click; this indicates that your dose has been delivered.

3. Post-Injection:

   • Dispose of used needles safely to prevent injury or infection.
   • Store the pen with its cap on to protect it from light.

Dosage Information

When starting Saxenda, patients typically begin with a lower dose that is gradually increased over several weeks until reaching a maintenance dose of 3 mg daily. A single Saxenda pen contains enough medication for approximately six days once at maintenance dosage.

Side Effects and Precautions

Common side effects associated with Saxenda include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, headache, fatigue, dizziness, and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Serious side effects may include thyroid tumors (including cancer), pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney damage, and severe allergic reactions. Patients should be monitored regularly for these potential adverse effects.
